What should you do if an IED is found?

If an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) is found, the most critical action is to ensure personal safety and the safety of others in the area. The appropriate response in this situation is to avoid touching the device. This is crucial because handling or disturbing the IED can trigger an explosion, putting individuals at severe risk.

Recognizing the hazards associated with an IED, the immediate priority is to secure the site and create a safe perimeter around the device. While other actions, such as calling for backup or documenting the location, may become necessary steps after ensuring safety, the first and foremost action must always be to avoid any contact with the explosive device. Only trained explosives ordnance disposal (EOD) personnel should approach or handle an IED after it has been reported and secured.
